How To Choose the Best Kayak Anchor?
I will try to tell you more about the kayak anchor types, and you will also be given some factors to consider while buying an anchor for your kayak or canoe.
What are the types of kayak anchors?
There are different types of kayak anchors available on the market. Some of them aren’t technically an anchor, but they are used for a similar purposes. This is why I decided to mention them in this post.
Folding Anchors
As I said before, any heavy thing can do the job, but the process is risky and may put you in trouble. This is why we suggest you use either a 1.5 lb or 3.0 lb folding anchor. If your kayak is small, I will advise you to use 1.5lb, and 3.0 lb folding kayak anchors for big kayaks. There are other ways to slow down or stop a kayak for moving, but folding anchors are the easiest to prevent the movement of a kayak. Besides that, a folding kayak anchor will take minimal space when not in use. Even though they aren’t the best option for a sandy bottom, a lot of people use them in such areas.
Kayak Anchor Trolley system
You can also use a kayak anchor trolley system. This is one of the effective ways to keep your kayak still in shallow water. You will have your anchor trolley and your anchor pin to make the process happen. Instead of using kayak anchors in muddy shallow water, it is wise to use a pin. It will go down to the mud and much stronger once pinned. Kayak anchors might drift in windy weather, but this system has lesser chances of being moved. To be honest this actually depends on the size of the kayak.
If you aren’t kayaking in very windy weather, and you don’t own a big monster sized kayak, it is entirely ok to use a kayak anchor. Please note that some people also call them stake out pole.
Bruce Style kayak anchors
There is another kayak anchor type named Bruce Style Anchors. If you are kayaking in a place where the bottom is silty or sandy, Bruce style anchors are perfect for you. Bruce style anchors can hold down the bottom by digging in. They are an excellent choice for the muddy bottom in coaster area or lakes.
Drift Chutes
Though they aren’t technically a kayak anchor, they are designed to slow the kayak movement. Drift chutes look like a parachute, and also their working mechanism is similar. Once used, the drift chutes will start getting bulky with the water it holds, and it will slow down the kayak. It is helpful to use in lakes and oceans but not in rivers.

Most kayak anchors are cheap. If you are still looking for a bargain, you can have some on the market. Or you can see in the eBay if anyone is selling any used one.
Weight
Most kayakers use either the 1.5 lbs or 3.0 lbs kayak anchors. 1.5 lbs kayak anchors are suited for smaller kayaks and less windy weather. On the other hand, 3.0 lbs kayak anchors are used for big kayaks in windy weather
