Nowadays there are so many types of fishing reels available on the market, that even the pro anglers struggle to figure out their applications. The fishing industry is changing rapidly, and this is why new types of fishing reels are introduced to different kinds of fishing. There was a time when we used to use a limited kind of reels for selected categories of fishing. Time has changed, and anglers are improvising to improve their efficiency. I will try to offer a handful of insights on the different types of fishing reels available to the anglers. We will see how these fishing reels can be used for different kinds of fishing. Manufacturers are introducing new drag settings, anti-backlash features, and many other features that can be useful for anglers to know. It is understandable that the fishermen may have their own choice or favorite type of reel, but surely using a reel designed for their type of fishing will be beneficial for them in many ways. That being said, there are four types of fishing reels that are going to stay here for a very unforeseeable future. We will see other types of reels, but let’s start with these evergreen fishing reels first.

Types of Fishing Reels

#1. Spincasting reels

When I was young, I started learning to fish with a spin-cast reel. To be honest, most young or noob anglers start fishing with spin casting reels. Spincasting reels are also called closed face reel for their design.

Some of them will even come with cartoon figures like Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck. But don’t these light talks undermine the power of these reels. They can serve really well when the fisherman starts using and understanding them.  Unlike the advanced and new fishing reels, this type of fishing reels is comparatively easy for the newbies to handle. Operating this spin cast reel is easy: you will have to press and hold the button. Then, rear back to the cast, move forward, and let go of the button. Sounds easy right? It is easy. However, if you don’t want to cast too further, you can just push the button again to stop it.

As much as I love the spin-cast reels, there are some drawbacks to this reel too. As you already know, these reels are made for beginners only. Professional anglers might not like this or may find the capabilities limited. The spool inside the reel is usually shallow. So it is wise to use a lighter test line. Also, cheap spin-cast reels have generally less durable materials inside. The drag system they come with works fine, but nothing fancy (there are exceptions too). A lot of the cheaper reels are made for occasional usage: so, if you love these spin-cast reels, I would suggest getting a durable one.

#2. Spinning Reels

Spinning reels are undoubtedly the most popular fishing reels available on the market. There are many reasons for their popularity. Using a spinning reel is very easy, but the performance is top-notch. Spinning reels are often called open-face reels due to the open design. You can find spinning reels in different sizes which makes them versatile. Almost most anglers can take advantage of these fantastic fishing reels. They are suitable for both newbies and professionals. However, spinning reels require you to master it. The learning curve can be moderately difficult for a newbie.

Spinning reels are usually better for heavier lures and have faster retrieval speeds with better cranking power. With spinning reels, you get more options concerning the types of lures you can choose, the species of fish to catch, or the retrieval technique. Spinning reels are usually for advanced users, but beginners also can enjoy them. A few years back, these spinning reels were expensive, but they are becoming reasonable now.

A few problems that you may encounter with a spinning reel are: Not made to handle very heavy fish & Backlash may occasionally twist your line (very few)

#3. Baitcasting Reels

Baitcasting reels are popular for their ability to handle heavier lines and longer casts. A spinning reel of the same size won’t have the same ability. A baitcasting reel can be more powerful and advanced than its spin casting counterparts. A baitcasting reel allows casting lures like jigs, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and more.

However, if you can’t measure the perfect spot of thumb pressure to stop the spool when the line flows, the lures might get tangled. Due to the backlash, a lot of newbies don’t prefer the baitcasting reels, but once you learn the trick, you will thank yourself. If you can master a baitcasting reel, there are very few chances that you will go back to other types of spinning reels.

As you keep using a baitcasting reel for a long time, you will fully understand the accuracy and distance. The brake system of the reel can regulate the rotation of the spool when you cast. If you keep adding more brakes to your reel when you are casting, you will feel the resistance on the spool. It can prevent happening the big bird’s nest, but it will also affect your casting distance.

#4. Fly Reels

Fly reels are different than regular fishing reels. They are designed to hold the line offer drag as the fish runs. The other reels mentioned above are so different than fly reels that this is only recommended for fly fishing. Fly fishing is a different type of fishing style, and only fly reels are compatible with that. Due to the method of fishing, most of the fly reels will get wet. As a result, it is wise to choose a fly reel that won’t catch rust if it gets wet.

Line weight plays a significant role when choosing a fly reel. For example, if you chose a 6-weight line, you should get a fly reel built for that. Otherwise, your fishing experience will be ruined. Some of the best fly reels available in the market are crazy expensive, but there are cheap alternatives too. There are some other factors to consider like the arbor, weight handling, drag system, and more.

Understanding different types of fishing reels will help you choose the perfect fishing reel for your kind of fishing. There are many other types of fishing reels available in the market, and a lot of them come with a customized setting for a specific style of fishing.
